Contingent Works: How has working at Contingent helped you and your business?

Tracey Latteman: There's two sides to it really. Before COVID I worked face to face with my clients up in the city, and then COVID hit and then when the space was open, it meant that I felt like I was still going out to work, and I was seeing people. I was very clear about when I wanted to get a workspace that I didn't want to go into a faceless office, and sit in a white box and that I wanted to be about community. So, there was that and it's helped, it keeps me focused, I get more done here than I do at home. Which is ridiculous really. It's because when I’m at home, if there's something I don't want to do, that's not really motivating me on a task that I don't really enjoy, but needs doing, if I'm at home, I will avoid it, If I'm here I get it done.

CW: What made you choose Contingent?

TL: Firstly, Ewan, I met him before when it was just an idea. And because it was about community.

CW: How would you describe your business and what you offer to people?

TL: I am an executive coach. I work at C suite level, but also from sort of mid to senior managers. And that's I think, where my sweet spot is because that's, I know the nature of that beast I've been there, I've walked in their shoes. I've also been in the C suite, but I think that's where I make the biggest impact. So, I am a career and performance coach. So, about 60% of my business is being pulled in by the organisation. So that could be a partner in a law firm or it could be the head of HR, or it could be the CEO so any sort of senior decision maker in the business, who's got a team member or a team where they want them to have a higher level of performance, or where there needs a better understanding of what engages that person, or if that person is looking for succession planning. They want support for that individual to make sure that they can achieve their vision of goals.

CW: What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

TL: Seeing the transformation in my clients, so the ability to understand where they want to go with their careers, and then achieving it.

CW: What advice would you give to someone looking to get into a similar role?

TL: Get qualified, qualify with a recognised provider. Because I think that's important. Anybody can say they're a coach, because it's not regulated. So, I think it's important to get qualified through a recognised provider, because that gives you that credibility. I think, it's about understanding that if you can be doing it on your own as a sole trader, there's so many elements you're not just coaching, and are there many specific providers that are sort of recommended that people should go through. I qualified for the ILM, which is the Institute of Leadership and Management. I did their level seven, which is equivalent of a Masters. So, I would say the ILM only because I looked at quite a few others, and because it's the Institute of Leadership and Management, and I wanted to be an executive coach and coach leader. That's why I chose it.
